In 2004 my father, Ross Jr asked me to meet with him at the agency.
Large direct response carriers came into the market, running TV and radio ads 24-7 telling customers to go online to “save” money. Their large marketing budgets combined with the shift in the sales process decimated our business. Ross Jr. was distraught.The business and relationships that 3 generations of Maghans had worked to build was shrinking fast.
At 62 years old, my father told me that he didn’t have the fight left in him to change and regrow. That’s when he asked me to join him to help restore the business my grandfather and great grandfather had founded.
I agreed and thus began the biggest challenge of my life: convincing my Pennsylvania native wife that we should leave our great jobs and apartment in downtown Philadelphia and move to the suburbs of NJ so that I could sell insurance! To my surprise – she agreed! (Asking her as we walked along the Asbury Park boardwalk while staring out at the ocean didn’t hurt either.)
A few short years later, the agency had grown so much that I was able to lure her away from her job to be my partner in the agency.
The Ross Maghan Agency continues to embrace the same family values and small town concern for our clients today, just as we did back in 1936. It’s been our mantra that people purchase insurance from us for the price and service, but stay because they feel like family.
