Our agency was Founded in 1936, by Ross Maghan Sr. and his father, George Maghan, as an insurance and real estate agency (They also developed film, you had to wear many hats in those days to make a living!).
The office back then was on Highway 34, and the highway was not paved south of Matawan, so people looking to move from northern New Jersey to the “country” setting of Monmouth County would stop at Ross Sr.’s office. George would sell them a house and Ross would insure it, they were a real father and son team. Some of those customers are still with us today!
In 1968, following his Military service, Ross Maghan Jr. joined his father and grandfather at the agency. Sensing the change that was coming to the county, gradually over the next decade Ross Jr. would transform the agency from a parttime real estate/part-time insurance agency to a full time, full service insurance agency. Business and industry was following the migration south and Ross Jr. realized that the agency needed to be more than just a small home and auto insurance shop, so he grew his staff, expanded his markets , and was able to transform the small town office into a full service agency that could help manage the risks of businesses and the lives of the people who own them. For the next 35 years The Ross W. Maghan Agency LLC flourished.
This is where I come in
Ross Jr. was able to grow his business and service a growing array of clients. In 2004 he asked his son, Ross III (me, notice a trend?) to come see him. I left my job in Philadelphia and came to meet with my father at the agency. Large direct response carriers had entered the market and were decimating our business. TV and radio ads ran 24-7 telling them all they had to do was go online and they could “save” money. Ross Jr. was distraught. The business and relationships that 3 generations of Maghans had worked to build was shrinking fast. He told me he was 62 years old and he didn’t have the fight left in him to change and regrow. That is when he asked me if I wanted to join him and help restore the business my grandfather and great grandfather had founded. I agreed, and started on the hardest experience of my life: Convincing my Pennsylvania native wife that we should leave our great jobs and apartment in downtown Philadelphia and move to the suburbs of NJ so that I could sell insurance! To my surprise she agreed (that I asked her while walking the Asbury Park boardwalk staring out at the ocean didn’t hurt either). A few short years later we had grown so much I was able to lure her away from her job to be my Partner in the agency.
Today the Maghan Agency continues to embrace the same family values and small town concern for our clients as we did back in 1936. We invite you join our family and see what that means. It’s been our mantra that people purchase insurance from us for the price but stay for the service!
